we went out walking and found an abandoned plum orchard heavy with not quite ripe fruit. it smelled like summer and autumn together, ripe blackberries, warm dry grasses, dust, and cool beneath the surface. we saw our first owl in the wild, huge, swooping across a meadow in the woods beyond the orchard. it was bittersweet, time stopped, but the night came quicker than ever.
